Kabale University students from the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences during their Practical Sessions

On November 16th 2023 the Faculty of Agriculture had field practicals and the activities were carried out by students offering fertilizer technology
Land Use BAL 3108, crop production practicals BAL 2107, Botany and crop physiology students, AGRI
1105 and pasture agronomy students AGR2023/2024 academic session.

The major objective of these practicals was to present students demonstrating different modern agricultural practices and skills such as planting crops with correct spacing ,weeding, soil sampling techniques and soil nutrients analysis, data collection on the field crops, fertilizer application, identification of pasture crops for livestock development and spraying of organic pesticides to crops, germination of seeds, plant morphology and flowering pattern , profitability of Agri- business.

The following activities were carried out by the students on the field-

  1. Soil sampling technique on the field using soil auger for soil testing and sustainable crop
    production.
  2. Testing for soil nutrients (N, P, K, CA, Mg, PH, O.M) for effective crop production
  3.  Application of fertilizers to crops such as cabbage and carrot
  4. . Sampling weeds for research purpose and effective control using quadrant method
  5. . Field data collection and measurement of crop plant parameters for research and practical’s
    recording
  6. . Identification and data collection of pasture crops such as elephant grass, stylosanthes gracilis
    and pueraria phaseloides for feeding cows to produce milk and meat
  7. . Spraying of cabbage and carrot with organic pesticides by B.Sc. final year project students
  8.  Using effective line methods for planting crops with correct spacing to obtain maximum plant
    population.
  9. Group photographs of the students and their instructors on the field during the farm activities carried out.
  10. Major crops planted on the field include cabbage, carrot, maize, tomatoes, beans, wheat, Irish potatoes, beet root, broccoli and cucumber which were captured on camera
