Kabale University Faculty of Education staff conducting a study using talking circles (focus groups discussions) with pupils, parents and elders from the Batwa Indigenous community of Kisoro and Rubanda districts in south western Uganda. The study themed “Examining the relocation of the Batwa Indigenous people from the forests and its influence on their Indigenous Education, Customs and Cultures” is funded by the Spencer Foundation (#Spencer reference number 10037874). Among others, the study investigates how the relocation of the Batwa Indigenous people
from their natural habitation in the forests influenced their indigenous education, customs, and cultures. It examines the Batwa indigenous pedagogy and its effectiveness in inculcating Batwa custom and culture in their current setting. It also seeks to develop Batwa Indigenous pedagogies as a strategy to promote Batwa cultures and knowledge system through formal education. Lastly, the project aim is to determine models for integrating Indigenous education system into formal education system that built community/schools capacity to enhance the transmission of Batwa customs and cultures in their current setting.
